In Matthew 6.13 and in Luke 11.4 we read “but deliver us from the evil one” (NKJV) and in Greek language “ἀλλὰ ρῦσαι ἡμᾶς ἀπὸ τοῦ πονηροῦ”. [1]

Jesus was asked to teach us how to pray and He used a very interesting verb for the deliverance from evil. The Greek verb “ρῦσαι” is the imperative of the verb “ῥύομαι” [2] ( pronunciation: riome [3]).

The specific verb has multiple meanings such as deliver, protect, heal, but one of the most beautiful, in my opinion, is to pull someone in safety by moving him towards ourself. [4]

In this context we ask God to deliver us from evil by pulling us towards Him.
