Longsuffering/μακρόθυμος

In the book of Numbers 14:18 we read “The Lord is longsuffering” (NKJV) and in Greek “Κύριος μακρόθυμος” [1].

The word “μακρόθυμος” (pronunciation: makrotheemos) is a masculine adjective and is a compound of the adjective “μακρός” ( pronunciation: makros) and the noun “θυμός” (pronunciation: theemos) [2].

The first part of the word “μακρός” can have the meaning of long (time) [3] or of long (length) [2]. The second part of the word “θυμός” mainly has the meaning of wrath or anger in modern Greek. In ancient Greek, though, the same word “θυμός” can be translated as breath, and soul [4], [5].
